If you've been put off visiting Japan because of the recent articles about over-tourism, there are plenty of places off the beaten path waiting for you. One such place nestled in the Sea of Japan, Sado Island, offers a unique blend of experiences that will leave you enchanted and inspired.
The first time I visited Sado Island in 2006, it was to take part in a wadaiko (taiko - Japanese drumming) workshop by Kodō. As I was playing professionally back then, it was of course 'work' but still an amazing experience I will treasure forever. If you want to capture a little bit of the magic of taiko I recommend going there for the yearly Earth Celebration Festival which features Kodō as well as other entertainment. It's in August, check out their website by clicking here.
The last time I went I did visit the festival, but I also had a wonderful time discovering the rest of this tiny island. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the historic Sado Kinzan Gold Mine. The tour provided fascinating insights into the mine's history and its significance during Japan’s feudal era. It was also fun to show off my taiko muscles to an amazed audience as I lifted a superheavy gold bar (see the photo below).
After all the excitement of the festival and the mine, I recommend checking out the many hiking paths that offer beautiful vistas and of course the beaches for a refreshing swim in the sea. One day I'll go back for an extended visit, for now I'm stuck revisiting memories of this wonderful place.
